Historic Gallery

The Rotherhithe Picture Research Library is a non-profit making educational trust which houses an extensive collection of pictures of all kinds for visual research, including a collection of local photographs of the river, the docks, hop-picking, beanos, streets and more. The following pictures on this page are examples from the local collection. More pictures can be seen at the Local History Library based at the John Harvard Library, 211 Borough High Street, London, SE1 1JA,             https://www.southwark.gov.uk/libraries/find-a-library?chapter=9

Note: Many of Southwark’s famous landmarks are connected to the Transatlantic slave trade. Historical captions, for example, about houses built with the proceeds of Jamaican sugar plantations should be read in this context.
